How to make a motorcycle bill of sale
-
Describe the motorcycle
Year, make, model, color, engine size in cc, the VIN and the odometer reading. The VIN is checked as you type.
-
Add the seller, the buyer and the price
Both names and addresses, the date, the price in figures and words and how it was paid. Add helmets, a cover or spare parts under “Also included”.
-
Print two copies and sign both
Each of you signs both copies and keeps one. Then sign the title over as well so the buyer can register the bike.
What a motorcycle bill of sale should include
- The full names and addresses of the seller and the buyer
- Year, make, model, color and engine size
- The VIN, usually on the steering head and on the title
- The odometer reading on the day of the sale
- The price, the date and how it was paid
- Whether it is sold “as is”, and that it is free of any loan or lien
- Both signatures with printed names and the date
Title and odometer
As with a car, ownership of a road motorcycle passes through the title: the seller signs it over and the buyer registers the bike. The bill of sale records the price and the date, which many DMVs ask for.
US federal odometer disclosure applies to motor vehicles of model year 2011 and newer, for 20 years (49 CFR 580.5 and 580.17). The official statement goes on the title; the bill of sale keeps a record for both of you. Off-road bikes and scooters may be titled differently or not at all, so check your DMV.
Test rides and payment
- Before a test ride, ask to see the rider’s license with a motorcycle endorsement, and agree what happens if the bike is damaged.
- Compare the VIN on the frame with the title before any money changes hands.
- Meet somewhere public, and use a payment you can check, such as a cashier’s check confirmed with the bank.
- Hand over the title, keys, manual and service records, and keep your signed copy.

Frequently asked questions
Is a motorcycle bill of sale the same as a car bill of sale?
Almost. It adds the engine size and leaves out details that only matter for cars. The tool shows the right fields for each.
Do I need to write the mileage?
For motorcycles of model year 2011 and newer, US federal law requires the seller to state the mileage when ownership changes. The official statement goes on the title.
Can I sell a motorcycle without a title?
For a road motorcycle the buyer usually needs the title to register it. If the title is lost, ask your DMV for a duplicate before you sell. Some off-road bikes are not titled; then the bill of sale is the main record.
Does a motorcycle bill of sale need to be notarized?
In most states, no. A few require it in some cases, so check your DMV. Turn on the notary block if you need it.
Can I sell it “as is”?
Yes. The as-is clause is on by default. It does not cover hiding a problem you know about.
Is this motorcycle bill of sale free?
Yes. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark. What you type stays in your browser.
