How to make a trailer bill of sale
-
Describe the trailer
Year, make, model or type (utility, cargo, boat, car hauler, camper), color, length, empty weight and the VIN from the frame or the title.
-
Add the seller, the buyer and the price
Both names and addresses, the date, the price in figures and words, and how it was paid. Add anything sold with it, such as a spare tire or ramps.
-
Print two copies and sign both
Each of you signs both copies and keeps one. If the trailer has a title, the seller signs that over too.
What a trailer bill of sale should include
- The full names and addresses of the seller and the buyer
- Year, make, type and color of the trailer
- The VIN, usually stamped on the tongue or the frame
- The length and the empty (unladen) weight
- The price, the date and how it was paid
- Whether it is sold “as is”, and that it is free of any loan or lien
- Both signatures with printed names and the date
Title or registration?
States treat trailers differently. Some title every trailer, some only those above a certain weight, and some just register small trailers. That is why the bill of sale matters: for a trailer without a title it may be the main proof of the sale. Check your DMV’s rules before you sell.
Homemade trailers and trailers without a visible VIN often need an inspection or a state-assigned VIN before they can be registered. Ask your DMV what it needs first.
No odometer statement
Trailers are not self-propelled, so the federal odometer disclosure does not apply to them (49 CFR 580.17). The trailer form leaves the mileage out.
Tips for selling a trailer
- Check that the VIN on the trailer matches the title or registration.
- Check the lights, tires, coupler and safety chains, and note any known problems in the terms box.
- Hand over the title or registration card, keys for any locks and the manual if you have it.
- Keep your signed copy with the date of sale.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a bill of sale for a trailer?
It depends on your state, but it is always a good record. For a trailer that has no title, the bill of sale may be the main proof of who owns it, so most buyers will ask for one.
Where is the VIN on a trailer?
Usually on a plate or stamped into the tongue or the frame near the front. It should match the VIN on the title or registration.
Does a trailer need an odometer statement?
No. Federal odometer disclosure rules do not apply to vehicles that are not self-propelled, such as trailers.
What if the trailer is homemade?
Many states need an inspection or a state-assigned VIN before a homemade trailer can be titled or registered. Ask your DMV before the sale and describe it as clearly as you can on the bill of sale.
Can I sell a boat and its trailer together?
Yes. Make a boat bill of sale and list the trailer under “Also included”, or make a separate trailer bill of sale if your state titles trailers on their own.
Is this trailer bill of sale free?
Yes. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark. What you type stays in your browser.
