Design
Whole page · the printed page has no watermark or logo.
Some text does not fit: a word is too wide for its space, or text is too close to the edge of the sign, where most printers cut it off. Shorten the title or the message, make something smaller (click or tap it on the sign), or try another design.

How to make an out of order sign in 3 steps
-
Choose the kind of sign
Out of order, restroom, elevator, machine, do not use or closed for cleaning. Each comes with its own title and symbol; rewrite them if you like.
-
Add the details
When it should be back (or leave it empty to write the date by hand), what to use instead, a short message and your business name or logo.
-
Print and post it
Print a full page, or two half-page signs to cut apart or fold into a table tent. Save it as a PDF to print again next time.
What to put on an out of order sign
- What is out of order, in big letters that can be read from a distance.
- What to use instead: another restroom, the stairs, the machine by the entrance.
- When it should be back, if you know. Leave the date empty to write it in by hand and reuse the sign.
- A short apology or thank-you, and who to ask for help.
Tips
- Keep the title short: “Out of Order” reads from across a room; a sentence does not.
- Red or orange stands out; black uses the least ink.
- Put a clear sheet protector over the sign, or laminate it, if it will be up for a while or near water.
- Take the sign down as soon as the repair is done, so people trust your signs next time.
- For anything dangerous (a spill, a wet floor, a live wire), block the area off as well as putting up a sign.
Printing, cutting and folding
- Print at 100% (Actual size). Most printers cannot print the outer 1/4 inch, so the designs stay inside it.
- Half page: choose “cut” for two signs to cut apart, or “fold” for a table tent that reads from both sides.
- Card stock (65–110 lb / 170–300 gsm) stands up better than plain paper.
Frequently asked questions
Is this out of order sign maker free?
Yes. It is free to use, needs no account or sign-up, and never adds a watermark or a SnapPaperwork logo to your sign.
Can I change the words?
Yes. Click any text on the sign to rewrite it, or use the Wording panel. You can also make each part bigger or smaller, or hide it.
Can I leave the date blank and write it by hand?
Yes. Leave the date empty and the sign prints a line to write on, so you can keep a printed stack and fill one in when you need it.
Can I add my logo?
Yes. Upload a PNG or JPG; it stays in your browser and is never uploaded.
What paper sizes does it print on?
US Letter and A4, as a full page or as two half-page signs on one sheet.
Is my information uploaded or stored on your servers?
No. Everything you type stays in your browser and is never sent to me. It is saved on your own device so it is there next time.
