What is a service receipt?

A service receipt is a written record that someone paid for a service such as cleaning, lawn care, tutoring or handyman work. It shows who paid, who provided the service, what it was, the price and the date. Give one when you are paid and keep a copy.

How to write a service receipt in 3 steps

  1. Choose the kind of service

House cleaning, lawn care, tutoring, lessons, personal training, handyman work, or any other service. The title and the labels change to match.

  2. Fill in who paid and how much

The client, the dates, and how many hours, visits or sessions at your rate: the amount is worked out and written in words. Add lines for materials or extra work.

  3. Sign it and send it

Sign on screen or on paper, then print it, save a PDF or share it straight from your phone. Keep a copy for your own records.

What a service receipt should include

  • The date you were paid and a receipt number
  • The client’s name
  • What the service was, where, or for whom (the address cleaned, the student taught)
  • The dates of service
  • How it was charged: hours, visits, sessions or a fixed price, and your rate
  • The amount, in numbers and in words, and how it was paid
  • Your name, contact details and signature

Charging by the hour, visit, session or job

Cleaners and lawn services often charge per visit, tutors and trainers per session, music teachers per lesson, and handymen per hour or per job. Some services charge by the week or the month.

Choose “Charged by” in the form, fill in how many and your rate, and the receipt shows it, for example “4 visits @ $45.00/visit”. Add separate lines for materials or extra work, and the total adds up.

Receipts and taxes for self-employed workers

If you provide a service to clients as your own business, the money you earn is self-employment income. In the US you generally must pay self-employment tax if your net earnings from self-employment were $400 or more in the year, worked out on Schedule SE.

Keep a copy of every receipt you give, with your expenses (supplies, equipment, mileage), so your records add up at tax time.

Frequently asked questions

Is this service receipt generator free?

Yes. It is free to use, needs no account or sign-up, and never adds a watermark or a SnapPaperwork logo to your receipt.

Which services can I use it for?

Any service you are paid for. House cleaning, lawn care, tutoring, lessons, personal training and handyman work each have their own title and labels; “Any service” works for everything else. You can rewrite the title in “Wording”, for example to “WINDOW CLEANING RECEIPT”.

How is the amount worked out?

Fill in how many hours, visits, sessions or lessons and your rate, and the first payment line becomes how many times the rate. You can still type a different amount, and add more lines for materials or extras.

Can I print a copy for me and one for the client?

Yes. Tick “Two copies on one page” with the Basic, Letter or Register slip layout and cut the page in half.

Can I send the receipt by text or email?

Yes. On a phone, tap “Share” to send the PDF through Messages, WhatsApp, email or any app you use. On a computer, download the PDF and attach it.

Is a receipt the same as an invoice?

No. An invoice asks to be paid; a receipt confirms that you were paid. Give a receipt once the money is in.

Are my details uploaded or stored on your servers?

No. Everything you type stays in your browser and is never sent to me. Your details are saved on your own device so they are there for the next client. On a shared computer, press “Clear Form” when you are done.

How do I save the receipt as a PDF?

Click “Print / Save PDF” and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer, or click “Download PDF” to save a file straight to your phone or computer.
