How to make a handyman invoice
-
Add your details and the customer’s
Your name or business, phone and email, then the customer’s name and the address where you worked.
-
List the labor and the materials
Use one line per job or per block of hours. Put materials on their own line so the customer can see what was labor and what was parts.
-
Set the terms and send it
Small jobs are often “Due on receipt”. Print it, save a PDF, or email the PDF the same day you finish.
A handyman invoice shows the work you did, the hours or flat price, the materials and what the customer owes. The form on the left builds it as you type.
What to put on a handyman invoice
- Your business name and contact details, the customer’s name and the job address
- An invoice number, the invoice date and the date the work was done
- A short description of each job, such as “Repair sagging gate and rehang”
- Labor as hours with an hourly rate, or as a flat price per job
- Materials listed separately, and a note if the customer supplied them
- Any discount, tax if you charge it, the total and the balance due
- How to pay, plus a line saying the work is complete
Sample line items for repair and odd jobs
The sample invoice mixes hourly labor, a flat-price job and a materials line. Its prices are made up. They are not a price guide, so use your own rates.
- Labor (per hour), with a note of what was done
- Flat-price job, such as replacing a faucet or hanging a door
- Drywall patch and paint (per hour or per job)
- Minimum or trip charge for short visits
- Materials and parts (at cost or with your markup)
- Haul-away or disposal of old parts (per load)
How to price: per hour, per job or a mix
Small repairs are often billed per hour, with a minimum so a 20-minute call is still worth the trip. Well-defined jobs such as a faucet swap are easier to bill as a flat price per job, which customers like because they know the cost up front.
Many handymen mix both: flat prices for the jobs and an hourly line for extras. Keep materials separate either way. If the customer asked for a quote first, use the same wording on the invoice.
Tips for getting paid on time
- Hand over or email the invoice before you leave the job, or the same day.
- Write the hours and the date of the work so there is no argument later.
- Keep receipts for materials in case the customer asks.
- If the job grew, note the extra work on its own line.
- Whether you need a licence for the work, and whether tax applies, depends on where you work. Check your state’s rules or ask your tax adviser.

Frequently asked questions
What should a handyman invoice include?
Your business details, the customer and job address, an invoice number and date, a description of each job, labor hours or flat prices, materials on their own lines, any tax, the total, the balance due and how to pay.
Is there a free handyman invoice template?
Yes. This page is one. Fill it in, check the preview and print it or save it as a PDF. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.
Should I bill hourly or per job?
Either works. Hourly suits small or unpredictable repairs; a flat price per job suits work you can size up front. Many people use both on one invoice.
How do I show materials the customer bought?
Add a line such as “Faucet (customer supplied)” and put your labor on its own line. That makes it clear what you charged for.
Do I need a licence or to charge tax?
That depends on where you work and what the job is. Check your state’s rules or ask a professional. Enter a tax rate in the tax box only if you charge it.
Can I add my logo and change the title?
Yes. Click the title on the sheet to change it, and use the logo button to add your logo. Your logo stays in your browser and is never uploaded.
