How to make an electrician invoice

  1. Add your business and the client

Your company name, phone and email, then the client’s name and the address of the job.

  2. List the visit, labor and materials

Add the service call, your hours, and each device or fixture on its own line with a quantity and price.

  3. Set the terms and send it

Choose “Due on receipt” or a term like Net 15, add anything already paid, then print, save a PDF or email it.

An electrician invoice shows the visit, the hours of labor and the materials, then the total and the balance due. Fill it in at the end of the job, check the preview, and print it or save a PDF.

What to put on an electrician invoice

  • Your business name and contact details, and the client’s name and job address
  • An invoice number, the date, and the date the work was done
  • A service call or trip charge on its own line
  • Labor, with hours and your hourly rate, or a flat price for the job
  • Devices and materials, such as outlets, switches, breakers, wire or fixtures, with quantities
  • Any fees you passed on to the client, on their own lines
  • The total, any deposit received, and the balance due
  • How to pay and when payment is due

Sample line items for electrical work

The sample invoice has a service call, hourly labor, a count of devices and a fixture install. The prices are made up. They are not a price guide, so use your own rates.

  • Service call and troubleshooting (per call)
  • Hourly labor (per hour)
  • Outlets, switches and cover plates (per device)
  • Ceiling fan or light fixture install (per fixture)
  • Breaker or panel work (per job, with parts listed separately)
  • Smoke or carbon monoxide detector install (per detector)
  • Wire, conduit and fittings (per job or per foot)

How to price: per hour, per device or per job

Many electricians bill troubleshooting by the hour and installs by the device or fixture. A per-device price makes a job like “replace six outlets” easy to quote and easy to read. Larger jobs are often a flat price for the whole job.

Write the unit on each line (hour, device, fixture, job) and keep materials on their own lines. That way the client sees what was labor and what was parts.

Tips for a clear electrician invoice

  • Name the work: “Replace 3 outlets and 1 switch, kitchen” is clearer than “Electrical work”.
  • Show materials apart from labor so the client can follow the total.
  • Note anything you found that needs a later visit, so it is on record.
  • Keep a copy. Clients, landlords and insurers sometimes ask for one.
  • Licensing and inspection rules differ by place. Check your state’s rules, and ask your tax adviser about tax.

Frequently asked questions

What should an electrician invoice include?

Your business details, the client and job address, the date, a service call line, labor, materials on separate lines, the total, anything already paid, the balance due and how to pay.

How do I bill by the device?

Add a line such as “Outlets, switch and cover plates” with the number of devices and your price per device. The sheet works out the line total.

Can I show labor and materials separately?

Yes, and it is a good idea. Put labor on one or two lines and each material on its own line, so the client can see where the total comes from.

Is there a free electrician invoice template?

Yes. This page is one. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark. What you type stays in your browser.

Should my licence number be on the invoice?

That depends on where you work. Check your state’s rules, and add your licence number to the notes if your area asks for it.

Can I invoice a deposit?

Yes. Enter the amount already paid and the balance due updates. If you want a proof of payment, give a payment receipt as well.
