How much notice? Some examples
For a month-to-month or other periodic tenancy, the notice is set by state law, and the lease may say more. A few examples, from the laws themselves:
Where
Notice
Good to know
CaliforniaCivil Code § 1946
Month-to-month: at least 30 days, in writing, given at any time
Rent is due up to and including the day the tenancy ends. A written agreement made when the tenancy starts can allow as little as 7 days.
TexasProperty Code § 91.001
Month-to-month: the tenancy ends on the later of the day in the notice or one month after the notice is given
A signed agreement can set a different notice period. If the tenancy ends partway through a rent period, rent is owed only up to that day.
FloridaStatutes § 83.57
Month-to-month: at least 30 days before the end of a monthly period, in writing
Month-to-month or other periodic tenancy: at least 20 days before the end of a rental period, in writing
Members of the armed forces who get orders that do not allow 20 days can give shorter notice.
These rules are for tenancies with no set end date. A fixed-term lease usually says what happens at the end of the term and whether you must give notice; moving out early can leave you owing rent under the lease. Read your lease first.
Elsewhere, check your lease and your state’s law. This tool prints whatever number of days you choose; it does not work out the notice period for you.
Before you move out
Give your forwarding address in writing. In Texas, a landlord does not have to refund the deposit or send the list of deductions until the tenant gives a written forwarding address (Property Code § 92.107).
Ask to be there for the move-out inspection, take dated photos of every room, and return all keys. If you have a move-in checklist, compare the two.
Once you have moved out, the landlord sends what is left of the deposit, often with an itemized statement of any deductions. See the security deposit return letter tool for what that statement usually shows.

New South Wales: Periodic agreement: at least 21 days’ notice. Fixed term: at least 14 days’ notice, ending on or after the end of the term. Residential Tenancies Act 2010, ss. 96, 97

Laws change, and this page is general information, not legal advice. Check the rules where the property is, or ask a local professional.
Delivering the notice and keeping a record
Deliver the notice the way your lease asks: by hand, by mail or by email. If you hand it over, ask the landlord to sign the “Received by” box on your copy. Certified mail gives you proof that it was sent.
Keep a signed copy. Fill in the record of delivery at the foot of your copy: the date, how it was delivered and who delivered it.
If you are the landlord
This notice is for tenants. A landlord ending a tenancy usually has to follow different rules: longer notice in many places, reasons in some, and an official form in others. Check your state’s law before you give one.

Yes. It is free to use, needs no account or sign-up, and never adds a watermark or a SnapPaperwork logo to your notice.
How much notice do I need to give my landlord?
+
Check your lease first. For month-to-month tenancies, the law sets a minimum: for example 30 days in California and Florida, one month in Texas, and 20 days before the end of a rental period in Washington.
Does the notice have to be in writing?
+
In many states, yes, and a written notice is always easier to prove. Keep a signed copy, and ask the landlord to sign the “Received by” box or send it by certified mail.
Can I move out before my lease ends?
+
A fixed-term lease usually binds you until it ends, so leaving early can mean owing rent until the unit is rented again or until the term ends. Some states and leases have exceptions. Read your lease and your state’s law.
We are two tenants. Who signs?
+
Choose “We” so the wording speaks for everyone, and add a signature line for each other tenant. Each tenant on the lease should sign.
Why include a forwarding address?
+
So the landlord knows where to send your security deposit and any statement of deductions. In Texas, the landlord does not have to refund the deposit until you give one in writing.
I am a landlord. Can I use this to ask a tenant to leave?
+
No. This notice is written by the tenant. A landlord’s notice to end a tenancy follows different rules in each state and sometimes needs an official form.
Can I change the wording?
+
Yes. Click any text on the page to rewrite it, including the title and the paragraphs. The “Wording” section lists everything with the words printed now.
Are my details uploaded or stored on your servers?
+
No. Everything you type stays in your browser and is never sent to me. The form is saved on your own device so it is there next time. On a shared computer, press “Clear Form” when you are done.
How do I save the notice as a PDF?
+
Click “Print / Save PDF” and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer, or click “Download PDF” to save a file straight to your phone or computer. The downloaded file is a picture of the page, so its text cannot be selected. “Share” opens your device’s share menu with the PDF attached, for example to email it.
