Words on the sign

Words on the sign

The words follow the kind of code until you type your own.

Look Colours

Rounded and dots soften the squares; the three big corner squares stay solid so phones still find the code. Scan it with your phone before you print.

It changes with the kind of code until you type your own. Leave it empty for no line.

Logo in the middle (opt.)

With a logo the code switches to its strongest error correction, and the logo covers less than a fifth of its width. Kept in this browser only; not included in a share link.

PNG for documents, slides and social posts; SVG for a print shop or a design app. Share link sends a link that shows this code, ready to scan: nothing is uploaded, the code travels inside the link.

Print at 100% (“Actual size”), not “Fit to page”. Scan one code from the printed page before you print or cut the rest.

Each of these makes the code and the paper it goes on, ready to print.

A text QR code that works without a website

A text QR code holds the words themselves. When someone scans it, the phone shows your text on the screen: no link opens, no app is needed, and it even works with no signal.

That makes it handy for things you would rather not put on a web page: a locker code, a clue in a scavenger hunt, instructions taped inside a cupboard, or a short note on a parcel. The code is made in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded.

How to make a text QR code

  1. Type your text

A sentence or two works best. Longer text makes a denser code with smaller squares.

  2. Scan it with your phone

The page reads the code back and shows the text it holds. Check it with your own camera too.

  3. Save it or print it

Download a PNG or SVG, print a sheet of the same code to cut out, or print a sign with your own words on it.

Ideas for a text QR code

  • Scavenger hunts and escape games: hide the next clue in a code.
  • Instructions on equipment, a shared fridge or a rental: “Turn the knob left first”.
  • A locker, gate or bike lock code for the people you give the paper to.
  • A label inside a box or on a parcel that says what is inside.
  • A short message in a card or a gift.

How much text fits

A QR code can hold a few hundred words, but every extra word adds squares. A code with a long message needs to be printed bigger to scan well. The Print size section shows how many squares your code has and the smallest width that is comfortable to scan.

For a long text, put it on a web page and make a code for the link instead.

Is a text QR code private?

Anyone who scans the code can read the text, so treat it like writing on the paper. It is private from the internet: the text is not stored on a server, and it was never sent to this site.

Frequently asked questions

Does a text QR code need the internet?

No. The text is inside the code, so the phone shows it even with no signal. Some camera apps offer to search the web for the text afterwards; that is up to the person scanning.

Can I change the text after printing?

No. The text is part of the code itself. Make a new code and print it again.

Can I use emoji or other languages?

Yes. The code stores the text as UTF-8, so accents, other alphabets and emoji work on modern phones.

Why does my phone not open anything?

There is nothing to open: a text code only shows its words. If you want it to open a page, use the QR code generator for a link.

Is it free?

Yes. No account, no watermark, and the code never expires.
